Spring 2017 Classes
Arts Education is a vital part of the mission of Park Playhouse. We firmly believe that developing a more culturally-engaged student body provides significant on-going benefit to our entire region. We offer a variety of programs, ranging from dance classes to workshops with Broadway professionals to summer-based camp programs. While we revel in working with students to build new skills for the theatre, and take pride in seeing our graduates go on to great success in the Broadway and film communities, we are equally concerned with providing young people with the confidence and comfort that they will need to succeed in any public speaking or professional environment. The performing arts build self-confidence and an ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with others: all skills that are absolutely essential in life, school and business. We offer classes for students as young as 8 years old and for ranging skill levels - from beginners to advanced students hoping to pursue a college degree and career in the performing arts!
Performing Artists’ Workshop (Grades 3-6)
Being on stage can be intimidating for a newcomer. From learning theatrical terms, to finding your singing voice, to conquering stage fright, the most important thing for beginners and intermediate-level students is to jump in and build their confidence and comfortability. With a team of professional instructors, our staff is ideal to help young students gain a fundamental understanding of the theatrical process. Throughout this 90-minute class, students will receive dance, vocal, and acting instruction - so sing your favorite Broadway tunes, dance your heart out, and develop some exciting characters during this 10-week session! Classes are held Wednesdays, March 8 through May 17 from 5:30 to 7:00pm at the Palace Theatre. There will be no class the week of March 27.
Young Voices (Grades 6-8)
A new offering - this group class is perfect for a child who loves to sing! We will focus on singing as a chorus in harmony and as soloists building audition material. Whether you have worked with a voice teacher before or are new to vocal instruction, our fabulous faculty will have you singing with great technique and confidence by the end of this 10-week session - and prepared for your next audition! Classes are Wednesdays, March 8 through May 17 from 7:00 to 8:00pm at the Palace Theatre. There will be no class the week of March 27.
ACting I & II (Grades 6-8 and 9-12)
This new class series is dedicated to advancing students’ skills in the art of acting. While many local students have private voice teachers or participate in dance studios, it is our experience that very few students have gained formal instruction in acting technique. We firmly believe that this is essential for success in theatre, including success as a dancer or vocalist. Learn improvisation techniques, character development, scene deconstruction, and more! Classes run Tuesday evenings from March 7 through May 16. Classes are held Tuesdays at 5:30pm and 6:30pm, respectively, at The Palace Theatre. There will be no classes the week of March 27.
DANCE CLASSES (GRADES 6-8 AND GRADES 9-12)
In 2017, we are offering a full series of dance classes in a variety of styles to students at a range of skill levels! Tuesday night classes are intended for students grades 6-8 and Thursday night classes are for students grades 9-12. Classes run Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 10 weeks from March 7 through May 18 (no classes the week of March 27) along the following schedule:
Beginner/Intermediate Tap - Tuesday @ 6:30
Musical Theatre Dance - Tuesday @ 7:30
Intermediate/Advanced Tap - Thursday @ 5:30pm
Ballet - Thursday @ 6:30pm
Jazz - Thursday @ 7:30pm
Whether you are an intermediate or an advanced student, our classes in tap, ballet, musical theatre dance and jazz will help develop your skills for application in the theatre. All classes held at The Palace Theatre in Albany, NY and are one hour in length.
Broadway Master Class Series (Grades 5-12)
Throughout 2017, we are thrilled to offer our Broadway Master Class Series - an exciting opportunity for students to work with and learn directly from Broadway professionals! As National Tours travel through our region, cast members will serve as Park Playhouse Guest Faculty, teaching a two hour class featuring a variety of musical theatre related focuses.
